Letter from Executive Director, Makeda Dread Cheatom
The Nigerian Yoruba goddess, Oshun rules the rivers that sustain life and dwells within the sweet or fresh waters (as opposed to the salt waters of her older sister Yemaya). The goddess Oshun dances to the rhythms of the streams, rivers, lakes and waterfalls in which she rules, and carry her voice with the sound of the waters.
In the African Diaspora, when millions of Africans were transported to the Americas and the Caribbean Islands in the Atlantic slave trade, Oshun went with her people. Like them, she acquired new names: Oxum in Brazil, Ochun in Cuba, and Erzulie-Freda- Dahomey in Haiti. As a goddess of love, Oshun is depicted as a beautiful, charming and a sensual young woman. Oshun is the cosmological forces of water.
With a shortage of water in the world and at home here in California, we must look at how we have taken our precious water for granted. The misuse of water has been going on a long time. All global corporations and citizens must take responsibility. In these crucial times we must call on mother nature to heal the planet earth. I have faith that collectively we can do it. It’s all about our mind intention.
Dr. Masaru Emoto, teacher and emissary for water and peace passed on October 17 2014 and is will known for his research on water crystals. In his book ‘Hidden Messages From Water and The Universe’ he says, “Everything is combination of energetic vibration. As vibration resonates, it makes tangible objects”. After you read this book, you will see that whatever you think or speak is programmed as a vibration into the 70% water in your body.
I was very fortunate to meet Dr. Emoto and this Water Celebration is dedicated to him. I strongly suggest that we send collective water blessings on Sunday, March 22nd wherever you are because many of the most profound and immediate impacts of Climate Change relate to water. More than two billion people have been affected by drought that’s more than any other physical hazard on the planet.
It will take I and I, you and me to maintain what we inherited from the Earth. Let’s train our children to be stewards of the Earth.World Water Day will be celebrated at both former water towers, WorldBeat Cultural Center and Centro Cultural del la Raza this Sunday, March 22nd. Activities will start at11am at the Cultural Plaza on the lawn between both centers. The event will continue at the WorldBeat Center from 4pm to 7pm. Please come in to both centers and taste water made from air by our atmospheric water generators. What a revolution!
I want to give a shoutout and big ups to our water generator sponsors, Watair and EcoloBlue. Thank you for being stewards of the Earth.
Blessed Love,
Makeda
